I have a motion light installed in the front of my house and every now and then it descides to turn on when there is no one there.... very odd. I know the wiring is correct, and there are no high power devices on the same line. I have reset it to no avail. It doesn't seem to be defective because it has a light level sensor built in and does not come on during the day which is normal. It only comes on at night for no apparent reason on occasion. If you walk in front of it in the dark it comes on and turns off on it's own like it's supposed to.... I'm baffled. There are no moving objects in it's path, and no sources of heat to set it off either. Any suggestions?

Could be an animal running past, wind blowing some bushes.

The motions used on outdoor lighting are not exactly high dollar motions - more than likely it's just susceptible to light interference, heat sources (maybe a car engine cooling? dryer vent? etc.), or God only knows what.
There are several things you can try:
1) Mask off "unused" areas of the motion detector
2) Set the sensitivity lower (if available)
3) Try a different light fixture if all else fails (it may or may not be any better)
Good luck!
