My kitchen and laundry room are baseboard electric. The thermostat shows postions of OFF, 40*, 50*, 60*, 70*, etc. When I turn the heat on, it "clicks" on slightly to the left of the OFF position. There is no degree marking here, but I would assume it would about 15*. The heat immediately comes on, and it stays on. No matter what temp I set it to, it comes on as soon as it leaves the OFF position and stays on until I "click" it back to the OFF. Is this normal, or is there a problem? This is our first winter in this home. I assumed that it would be on some sort of a sensor, as the thermostat is marked with various degree settings. I'd like to set it for 60* or so, but it never shuts off until I do so manually.

The thermostat has been there for quite some time, judging by it's appearance. More than 10 years.
If I put the heat on, it just keeps running until I turn it off. I have shut it off at about 75* because I was afraid there might be something wrong that would cause a fire. The heat comes on immediately upon hearing the click, no matter how warm the room already is. I could set it at 40*, and it would still come on even if the room were already at 90*,,you know? It works as though it were just an OFF/ON control, rather than a thermostat control.
