Hello
I was advised by a Dell tech to do the following; run 'msconfig', 'system configuration utiity', uncheck normal startup and check selective startup then uncheck 'load startup items'.
I have not had any problems with this but wouldn't mind a second opinion.
I certainly don't mind not having to have those icons in the right lower corner.
Thank you
Pete

i wonder why he wanted you to unselect all. this will keep any of your programs from loading at boot, like antivirus, spyware sweepers, windows scheduler, etc.
I am guessing you were having start up problems? you can check any program you want, like antivirus or firewall, and not the others. it won't hurt anything to leave it all unchecked though.

In other words, if I leave all unchecked , go online and forget to open my a/v , it will not be working-oh, oh! I think it's best to leave them all checked.
Thank you.

You could just check those items that are essential for running legitimate programs (i.e. anti-virus) and leave all the others unchecked, however, I would consider it a very poor long-term solution.
