I saw one formula that was sqft x 10. However, I have my doubts that it is this simple. A room in northern Minnesota would definitely require more heating than a similar room in Texas.

You need to do a heat loss calculation on the room in question. Most hvac supply stores will have a paper one they will sell cheap or you can get the program online for a small fee. This will give you btu loss and then just convert that to watts.
