My wife and I picked out a berber carpet that only comes on a 12' roll. When I measured the room it came out to between 11'10" and 11'11" wide and I measured from the base molding of one wall to the entry door (to the seam with the hallway carpet).

When the store came and measured, they got 12'1" and they said they pretty much added an extra inch or two just to be safe. By them doing that and going with the 12'1" measurement, we would get 3 seams in a room that is 12x13. Not to mention the increase in cost.

They said that they would do the install based on my measurement but they can't guarantee that the carpet would actually be in a 12' roll. They mentioned a lot of times the carpet roll is only 11'10". If the carpet comes in less than a 12' roll I am kind of screwed, but I certainly don't want 3 seams (of a berber carpet) in a room that is 12x13.

Any advice? Haven't really found another carpet we liked that comes in a 15' or 13'6" roll.

Thanks!

The carpet company is being safe, and taking the liability for shortages, so I do not blame them.
You could simply sign a waiver saying that if it is indeed short on width from the manufacturer, then you will pay for replacement.
I doubt you want that liability.
Plus keep in mind that the installer cannot seam from a factory edge, so they will trim a bit off for that too.

As a rule, we "play it safe" here.

You must remember to measure the extreme distance (center of door to back wall) The homeowner sometimes differs from the pro due to these little things missed. If the true measurement is 12'1", ( and everyone should measure NET! never ADD ON! or you will never really know the true dimension later) then the measurer also must consider straight edging (bead cutting) to prep for seams. Even if the room is 11'10", and there are seams on both sides...this is a problem, and technically a seam must be put in somewhere.

If the carpet has the slightest chance of not making it you assume the worst and buy the extra few feet for the panel if the carpet doesnt reach. A 5 yard difference. (at $20 per yard thats $100 more)

As i have said before...PLEASE try again to find a 13'6" or 15' piece!

OK, that being said, the dreaded berber panel seam. No, its not desireable, and if i were the installer i would hope not to go to your house :O)

from a financial standpoint, he makes $110-$150 installing it in about 2 hours if you find 13'6" or 15' goods.

If he has to do panels, he makes about $150-$200 and spends about 2 HOURS! busting his butt on that seam alone! :O)

OK, that being said...

Assuming you have no pattern to speak of...

Here are your cuts (but always..ALWAYS! leave the carpet in as big a piece as the installer can/would want to carry. we can do wonders with cut outs and such...i NEVER let anyone cut my carpet)

cuts: 13'3" , plus a 3'9" (*minimum) for the panel. TOTAL= 17' or 22.67 yards.

But as i said, leave it at 17'

*Minimum: Industry standard is 3ft panels. You want to allow 3 inches on each one to play with for straight edging (in this case, bead cutting). Now this gets you 4 panels. Obviously the more you buy the fewer panels you have. But this is fine. You end up with about a 3.9"x 6' waste.
