View Full Version : what if water softener will not handle all hardness?

The lowes and home depot softeners say they will only soften up to 125 hardness. My question is, if I have 200 hardness and these models are 'demand' based regeneration then won't there be a problem when the unit wants to regenerate? The manuals say you enter your hardness but I don't know if you can enter a number > the maximum the softener will handle. So if I can only enter 125 as my hardness, then by the time the unit thinks it should regenerate, it will be long overdue right? And there will be hard water until it does regenerate. I hope this makes sense. I just didn't know if anyone has run into this issue.

Their 125 is probably gpg, not mg/l or ppm. Your "200" converts to 11.7 gpg; 200/17.1 = 11.695 grains per gallon. But beware buying those brands, look up their service history first.
