I've repaired some cracks in a basement concrete wall, using injection epoxy, and I need to put a matching finish over the repairs. I have a bag of portland cement and I was going to try to do what was done originally to finish off this wall(by someone who knew what he was doing!)...which was to mix some extra sand in with the cement to get a level slightly gritty texture.
I bought some washed and graded plaster sand, premium grade, and realized at that point I had no idea what proportions to mix. I tried 2:1 sand to cement and got something that was too rough and didn't seem to go on very well(wouldn't stick, etc...).
I need some basic instructions as well as an idea of the proportions for mixing the sand and water. Also I wonder do I need some kind of adhesive to mix with the cement mixture, and is there a certain grade of sand that would be best for this...the surface I want to match is fairly smooth, with just a light grittyness caused by the extra sand added.
And is it possible that to do this I would have to redo the entire wall...if that's so is there an easier way such as adding the sand to some other substance that would still match up with the cement and could be blended in over the repaired areas.
Any suggestions would be helpful, you can see I'm flying blind at this point.

Since this is not stucco, this information on parging may be of help.

I don't know why I didn't follow this link until just now, but looks like parging is just what I want to do. A very belated thanks for this information.
