I just installed a new GE Natural Gas, direct vent water heater.

The new water heater is making a horrible pulsating noise whenever it is heating up. It’s very similar to the noise (or feeling) of when you’re driving down the road in a car at 55 mph and someone opens a window. Your eardrums pulsate.

Is there something I can do to eliminate the noise?

Contact GE or better yet contact Rheem who manufactures the GE units. They may tell you to check the heat trap nipples. They may send someone out to adjust the flue damper bar. Before calling, check your water pressure to ensure that it does not exceed 80 PSI while the burner is running . They will ask about this and recommend an expansion tank, so check it before calling.
