My tank is leaking very little and i think its time to get it replaced. Any idea how long would it last after it starts to leak just a little bit from the bottom? I was looking at sears, kenmore brand and in my area they said i can have it installed for 925 including taxes and have 12 yrs parts and tank warranty? I am a new home buyer and do not know anything about the tanks. is this a good deal or should i go with diff company? BTW, i am in New york city if it helps. Please let me know as i need to make decistion fast.

Unfortunately that's one of the mysteries of life. Is is leaking at the bottom? which would mean a bad tank, or, perhaps leaking from one of the heating coils on the side, behind a 4" X 12" removable panel? Only have this if it's electric.
$925 doesn't sound very competitive to me, but then I can buy, haul and install my own withou getting permits, and my trash collector will pick up my old one. I'm betting you need a permit, probably don't have a truck to haul it in, and may or may not know how to install without problems and I'm guessing your trash guys don't pick up large stuff like that. Still I'd get a couple of esimates from some others, like professional plumbers, NOT HOME DEPOT OR SEARS.
One other thing. You're a new homeowner right? By any chance did the seller or agent provide you with a homeowner's warranty? If so they'll do it for the deductible charge. If not, you're on your own.

A little leak? Rarely do leaks get smaller! Could it go for months with no change? Yes. Could you wake up tomorrow with water all over the place? Yes. So the answer depends on how much damage is going to be done if the little leak becomes a big leak.
I'm in California. From what I have seen and heard on internet forums Plumbing work in NYC is more expensive than in other areas. $925 installed for a water heater is not way out of line ( if it includes delivery, and haul away old unit.) I don't expect that a reputable local contractor could do it for much less. Just a thought....Home Depot now has a store in NYC. Call their 1-800-79DEPOT number and ask for a quote.
