CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO WIRE AN OUTSIDE LANTERN PLEASE.
MY NEAREST SOURCE OF ELECTRIC IS MY HALL AND LANDING SWITCHES.
THE ONLY OTHER THING I CAN HELP YOU WITH IS I'M PRETTY CERTAIN IT ISN'T A LOOPED SYSTEM.

Picking a place to tap power from requires a lot of knowledge. Switches are iffy places unless you fully understand both 3-way wiring and switch loops. The safest place is a unswitched receptacle which is not in a kitchen, bathroom, laundry area or dining room.

Please pick up a book on home wiring at your library or home center. You need to know hundreds of things, and I cannot cover them all here. If you want a suggestion, try Black and Decker's Complete Guide to Home Wiring.

Pay particular attention to information on GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interruption), underground wiring (UF-B), required burial depths (12" if GFCI protected), GFCI, box fill rules, and cable protection (conduit above ground). Read the book cover to cover. You need to learn codes, techniques, and wiring connections.

Post back with questions. You might get quicker response in the Electrical forum.
