I bought a condo recently and, at the time, the dimmer switch for the dining room worked fine. Now it doesn't: on/off works, but not the dimmer. I haven't touched the wiring, but I have replaced one of the 4 light bulbs in the fixture (standard 100w/120v bulb). The dining room is a single fixture with 4 standard light bulbs.
The switch is in a "double": the dimmer for the dining room is a slider with an on/off toggle at the base; the kitchen is a basic on/off toggle.
The kitchen does have another switch (also basic on/off toggle) at the other entrance. Kitchen lighting is a track with 5 small spots, 20w MR 16 (halogen, right?). Neither switch seems warm to the touch.

The dimmer is fried. Buy another one. Make sure it is rated for at least the number of watts it will control.
