View Full Version : Leaking Tub Spout

I have just replaced my tub spout/shower diverter. Used teflon tape. The spout mounts by screwing onto a threaded pipe that extends approximately 4" from the shower wall.
When I screw down the spout until it is tight it has passed vertical down by about 1/4 turn. If I back off the 1/4 turn the joint leaks. There is not enough thread to continue to turn an additional 3/4s to schieve vertical down.
Any suggestions?

Hi ColJack;
Welcome to the DIY Forums.
Are you screwing this on by hand or using a wrench?
If by hand, please use a wrench and you will achieve the 3/4 turn you need.If worried about marring the finish you can put the handles of a pair of channel locks into the spout and turn it that way.
If you are using a wrench to tighten, you might be able to wrap more tape on to the threads. As soon as you achieve vertical down STOP. If this does not stop the leak you will need to take the original spout and compare the thread distance of the 2. Take a measurement from the wall side of the spout to where the threads start. They are not all standard. They should be but for some reason they aren't.

ColJack,
If you're past vertical down, just re-tape the threaded fitting with an extra flat wrap of teflon tape or two and hand-tighten it on to where it is vertical down. Trial-and-error.
It shouldn't leak once you get it right.
Good luck!
Mike
