I am considering replacing a carpeted area with a wood parquet. The adjacent flooring is 3/4" wood so I think I need to make sure that the parquet is level with that. The parquet I have looked at is 5/8" thick so I need to "fill" 1/8". I chose to not try to match and integrate into the adjacent floor, but to alter the look of the flooring to diffentiate the spaces.
I have two questions. First, since the wood parquet is to be glued down, could a leveling thinset be used to get the floor more smooth (the OSB underlayment has a little swelling at the seems - not perfect) and fill in the additional 1/8 inch? The adjacent wooden floor was layed directly on the OSB (nailed).
Second, if I need to go with a new underlayment, what size should I use and how do I gracefully transition between the differing floor heights (2/8 plus 5/8 = 1/8 extra height). I plan on using a border to "differentiate" or define the visual transition. Is 1/8 of an inch too much to transition in a 10" border?
Whew. Hope that made sense. Any help is greatly appreciated.
