View Full Version : Electric Heating Burning Smell
We have had electric heating in the upstairs of our house since 1976 and it has always worked fine until a couple of years ago. It started to have a hot, burning smell but it wasn't very strong. Recently, it has gotten stronger and we don't know if it is a problem or something normal with electric heating. What should we do to look into this? Is electric heating wiring only good for a certain number of years?

Amelia, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
28 years is a long time. I would call an elecrician to look at this problem. Anytime you get a burning smell, it's time to get it taken care of. Please don't delay this. Winter is here and you'll be putting a strain on the heater. Good luck.
either dirt buildup on the strips, loose connection or strips going out. either way have it checked out
be prepared for a sales pitch though, being that old i would recommend a new one

You dont say if you have AC on this also. That will do it to you dirt. But just heat alone like hvac4u said can be just dirt on the strips also ,that has to burn off. If it is that strong I would have a service hvac look at it for sure. could be something else got in there on the strips. If thats what you have ???
