Can anyone help? My 10 year old kenmore keeps fillling with water. The float seems to be sticking open. Should I replace the float piece? How long do water softeners usually last? :)

The usuall cause is due to the unit not sucking the brine water out of the tank. There are a number of causes of that but your brand... there's a figure 8 gasket and a disc that wears/tilts etc. but the float might be a problem if it isn't sealing when it should be closed.
Softener life varies by the quality of the control valve and then then water quality it is installed on and how much water is used and how frequently it regenerates and the quality of the resin in it and how frequently the resin has been cleaned or not if needed and depending on how much if any chlorine is in the water etc BUT, ya can't pay the least'n get the best quailty equipment. You either pay now or pay much more later... So next softener, look for the best control valve.
