I currently have wall switch that controls the power to the fan and light separately. I would like to install a switch that will dim the lights and control the fan speeds. The current switch has four wires going to it. (3 black, 1 red). There are other wires in the box...several white and several bare copper. The new switch has 4 four wires (1 black/white-power, 1 blue-light, 1 black-fan, 1 green-ground). I was able to connect the switch so that the lights dimmed appropriately and the fan was controlled appropriately but nothing else on that circuit had power. My friend suggested using a "jump wire" to connect a couple of the black wires so the power continues to the rest of the circuit. Is this okay or a safety hazard?

Pigtailing of wires is commonly done when there are more wires than screw terminals. Use a short length of wire and the correct size wire connector to make the splice. Be sure to do theis with the power OFF.

You will just need to remember which wires were connected together on the old switches to restore power to the rest of the circuit.
