I tried the pigment from the bottom of the stain can and that did not work. I hate to paint the dresser, any different suggestions?

It's beginning to sound like the sides of the drawers were finished or at least sealed. If this is the case, stain will not hold. The sealer needs to be removed. This can sometimes be done with just lacquer thinner and 000 steel wool.

Another alternative is to mix artist oil colors to the color of the stain, and apply them. They will adhere to a finish and you can top coat them when dry.
