We just bought a house and it has a hot water boiler system. When I bleed the system, is it suppose to be cold or do I have to have the furance on so it forces the air out?
One of my zone valves is leaking. I unscrewed the nut and put plumbers tape to stop the leak. The leak stopped, but my question is the plumbers tape ok to use on a hot water system or does it get to hot for the tape?
One last question. I went to Menards, Home Depot and Lowes and no one carries any of the base board covers for the floors. Does any one know where I can find this stuff?
Thanks.

Yes it helps to have the boiler on and wam pump off. and then open a bleeder and let any air out. The Psi on the boiler is what will make water come out of the bleeder.

I have know idea of what you want here. You dont say if the boiler is gas or oil. If oil you should have it serviced. might help if you called a tech and went over the whole boiler with you . So you know how it all works.

You might try a heating supply center(speciality store) for the covers. If they don't have them they CAN tell you where to get them. Were there NEVER any covers? or were they damaged and needed to be replaced.
Good luck and post back.

Thanks for your help. They were damaged when we moved in. I tried a couple of supply stores and still can't find any. If I find a web site or good store, I will post the address.
The system is gas. You said the pump needs to be off. Do I just set the thermostat to a high temp and turn the electric switch off that is on the boiler inorder to bleed it?
Thanks

Turn the thermostat down to a temperature about 10 degrees below the current room temperature. You do not need turn any switches off. Go bleed the radiators and then reset the thermostat to the desired setting.
