We have a new construction home with no molding around the two entranceways into the dining room. The dining room has baseboard molding and a chair rail, both of which go all the way up to the entrances. The problem is that there is no molding around the entrances and so we don't know whether to paint the inside edge of the entrances the dining room color or the hallway color.

What we'd really like to do is add molding around the entranceways, which would allow us to have a crisp white surround, but we aren't sure whether we need to cut the chair rail and baseboard molding in order to add molding or if there's another way to go about it. Any advice would be appreciated!

The trim around an opening usually is installed first and the chair rail and base run up to it.

Painting the inside of the opening the color of either room is a judgment call.

I guess we'll have to see about having the molding re-done in order to fix this problem. Thanks for your help.
