Instead of changing out the faucet, can I prime it and spray it with Rustoleum or such like? Has anyone ever done this? If so, what should I use?

Please state your problem more clearly.
Has the chrome or brass finish corroded off of the outer handles, estucheons, tub spout, drain, shower arm and showerhead?
You can replace all of those without replacing the faucet body itself.
Painting them won't look good. Replacing those will make the whole thing look brand new.

I have the same problem with the chrome finish being corroded on the handles, tub spout, drain, shower arm and showerhead (and I don't know what an estucheon is). Functionally they work fine, so it's just an aesthetics thing. I'd like to replace these, but I have very little plumbing knowledge. Is this a job that a newbie could tackle? If so, can someone get me started please?
