I was wondering if you could help us decide what color stain to use on our hardwood floors that we're refinishing. The colors we're trying to chose from are a red mohogany and a color called merlot that's a dark reddish brown.

Our furniture though is cherry wood, but with a brown finish, and our room colors are khaki walls with white trim. Will either of these more reddish color stains look right, especially with our brown furniture, or do we need to stay close to the same color tone?

Thanks so much for any help or advice you might give us!

your furniture is brown and your walls are khaki........why the red floor?

i'd stay in the browns.

is this flooring going into the kitchen? if so, how are the cabinets finished? how about into the living room with a fireplace? if so, what's the wood around the mantle area? think about how the flooring will work with the other woods in the rooms. you want it to contrast, ie be lighter or darker, but in the same color FAMILY.

btw: i thought mahogany WAS a dark reddish brown - no???

Thanks so much! We just really liked the samples we saw at the store of these two reddish colors, and weren't exactly sure what to do as far as the color tones going with our other things. We'll go back now and look for something else that we like that's mostly brown.

We're not too worried about our kitchen right now. The lady we bought the house from put ugly berber carpet down right before she moved out!!! That'll be coming up too and replaced with tile some day and we'll be painting the old cabinets we have.

No fireplace so no need to worry about the mantel either. Just wood floor throughout (except the kitchen!) and soon-to-be white trim.

Thank you so much for your help! This will be much better than finding these things out after the floors have been stained.
