Hi everyone,

I'm getting ready to refinish the old oak flooring throughout our house and was hoping to have some questions answered before I do.

The floors are pretty squeaky almost everywhere. Do I need to do my best to fix these squeaks before I put the poly down? I'm afraid the it will crack later on if I don't.

Also, I'm going to be staining the floors as well. I've read about putting down the stain in long narrow strips that you can reach over so that you can go back and wipe it up. I'm not sure how to back myself out of a room though. How do you wipe up the last strip you put down if the rest of the floor has been stained?

I'd appreciate ANY help you all could give me.

Any repairs to floor will have to be done prior to staining and finishing. If joists are accessible, you can have someone walk around upstairs to identify squeaks. Insert shims between joists and subfloor. Sometimes it may be necessary to drill and counter sink screws and plug holes. Making repairs from below is best.

To apply stain and finish will require you starting in the far corner of the room and backing your way out the exit. Go to www.nofma.org for finishing instructions.
