I have a Carrier heat pump in a 17 years old townhouse. It heats fine but the has excessive air flow noise around the air register. I feel the air by hand and air flows very fast and it makes lots of noise. Is this common for a heat pump. The noise level is way high than a normal cental A/C system.

I am wondering if I can lower the indoor fan speed to lower the noise. Also, could the duct system be part of the problem?

My indoor unit model is 40AQ036300BU
outdoor unit model is 38QN030330

Thanks

For sure the duct work can have a lot to do with it. A real good job will have up to 80sq" per ton in the duct. You should be able to drop the fan speed some. look on the blower door there should have a schematic and gnive the blowe speeds. Try and drop down just one speed only.

Ed,

I searched around the around the blower panel, but can't find any schematic. Is there any way I can find out how to adjust the fan speed of my indoor unit?

Thanks,
Vincent

The next thing is to look at the motor and see how many wires come from it are that are taped off. look on top of the motor. I know its hard but lots of time there is one on it.
Now I dont know if this is what you have .But RED is low Yellow is medium and black is high

Ed,

There is a wire connector on top of the fan coil:
Wires from motor: Red Blue Purple
motor side connector : Red Blue Black Purple
connector label : 3 2 1 C
To board: Red Black Purple

Looks like the red wire from the motor is taped off. Motor's blue wire is connected to the red wire on the big circuit board with fuses on it, motor's purple wire is connected with the purple one on circuit board.

Maybe I can try to tap the blue wire from the motor to change fan speed? I had a hard time try to unplug the wires from the connector :(

Thanks.

I completely eliminated the air rushing sound coming from the air handler outlet difusers by installing an 18 inch long piece of round flex duct, with the outer insulation layer removed, in each one of my 6" runs off the main air supply plenum. The flex duct does but resistance in the system but 18 inches or so does not degrad :) e the system performance and will eliminate or greatly reduce the air flow noise described.
