Have an older toilet in the master bathroom that is used very infrequently but a black (almost dirt) ring forms at the water line in the bowl.
So the rings not caused by use. It has to be the water coming from the tank? Suggestions on how to clean or to prevent this ring?

Thanks for your help!

Since it is used infrequently, anything in the water (minerals and such) have a chance to set up and form a stain. Cleaning with bleach should remove the stain and a daily flush should keep it from returning. Hard (or even medium hard) water can cause a grayish stain to appear. It's from the calcium. Good luck.

Get a "Pumie" brand scouring stick. If your home center or hardward doesn't carry them, (my local HD quit carrying them) you might find them at Dollar General or one of the 99 cents or dollard stores. It's the best thing I've ever found for this problem. Once you've re-smoother the porcelain surface at the water line it will stay clean for a long time.

Just to add to the reference to a "Pumie" pumice stick.....if there is an Ace retailer in your area they will either carry it or can get it for you.And yes it will do the job.
