Flooring Tile - porciline tiles... (porcelain)

hmmm, why isn't there any subject regarding tiles for flooring...or specialty tiles such as porciline..i see alotta stuff about vynal,and other things in that rank. what about the "Good" stuff that last a lifetime (well depending who's walkin on it...heheheheh) :cool: :)

Sharp Advice: the question was "what about the "Good" stuff that last a lifetime...". Translation: I think you're looking for a rating of materials based on longevity. Well, depends on the room, what it's used for, the traffic, etc.

There's a lot to this subject, so I'll just mention tile. I'm personally in love with porcelain mosaic tile. Porcelain is a type of ceramic, but given a lot more attention to make it more resistant to wear. It's much harder and denser than classic ceramic tile. This is mostly due to longer firing time, and additives to increase strength.

An analogy is various grades of steel. If you go to the bolt section of your hardware store you'll find various grades of steel bolts. Grade 2 bolts are more ductile (easier to bend and shape) but less hard than grade 8 bolts. Grade 8 bolds are less ductile but since they're harder they end up being more brittle (under extreme stress can shatter or break cleanly).

Porcelain is great for floors in high traffic areas, and can last several decades under heavy wear if maintained properly. Resealing every couple of years, and periodic grout repair can go a long way keeping a porcelain tile floor looking great and holding up. I have a porcelain tile kitchen counter in my 1926 craftsman home that was probably set in the 1940's, and all it needs is new grout.

i chose the 20x20 porcilain tiles for 850+sqrft of floor over the ceramic which our builder wanted to use 16x16's ceramic..yuck , my opinion for such a large area y would u use a smaller size tile,and have all thos lines... anyways we are very happy and pleased on the look that we wanted ...it was alil difficult to actually narrow it down to color and size,due to the availablity. my floors are cover in these tiles from foyer(w/mosaic,custom center peice)and thruout kitchen and all the way to mud room and into the half bth.i wanted this kinda tiles cause of the traffic that will be goin in in out,even though it just us 3 chickens heheh,and parties we love to entertain...so ceramic would nt stand a chance i think.
