Hi guys,
I am a total newbie when it comes to water tanks, and I had some concerns. I am switching from electric to gas, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't being taken advantage of by the installer (who is also doing my gas fireplace).
The water heater they want to install is a State Select Power Vent, model number: PR6 40 NRVT. It has a 40 gallon capacity, 50,000 btu's, first hour rating of 81, and has 6 year tank and parts warranty. The price was over $800.00, not including installation.
I was recently at sears, and found a comparable model -- this one is a Kenmore Power Vent, model number 33296, 40 gallon model. It has 40,000 btu's, 1st hour rating of 74 gallons, and has a 6 year warranty on tank, and 1 year warranty on Parts. The price for this one is $429.99, without installation.
The question is -- is the State Select worth the price, or should I go with the Kenmore? The people installing the gas fireplace said they'd prefer to install the State Select, but would install another heater if I wanted.. I just feel like the $400.00 discrepancy is rather large for what I get.
Tips?

hamsandwhich, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
I, too, find the price differential high. Parts warranties do not include labor. I have not seen many parts on a gas heater go bad. At least with Sears, you know you can get parts. I am not familiar with State Select (they may be a premium heater). Ask your contractor what difference, besides the parts warranty, make this one worth that much more. Good luck.
