Hi. I'm remodling our kitchen and need to eliminate one baseboard radiator, about 5' long. We have a boiler and hot water heat. Access is very easy as one end of the baseboard goes up through the garage and into the kitchen and exits about 5' away into the garage and continues into the system. It is 3/4" copper. I was just going to cut out the baseboard unit and join the two ends, in the garage, with a 5' section of 3/4" copper.
This seems too easy. I'm not concerned about the heat loss. Is there a way to turn off the boiler and do this without draining the water? What do I need to do to make this easy, if there is such a thing. Thanks!

To accomplish your goal you will have to drain down the system to below the baseboard you want to remove as you won't be able to sweat the new piece in with water in it. If you have isolation valves you may be able to only drain a small portion of the system. Good luck with your project.

Like said You have to drain it down. You could put it down in the garage for heat there . You said the loss was ok. Are put armaflex on the pipe out there. I would put a bleeder in it there just so you have it if you need it.

Thanks very much for the info. The boiler is in the basement and is about 6 years old. I have a few more questions, please:
1. Should their be a place/valve on the boiler to drain the water?
2. How do I know how much to drain or when the level goes below the radiator I'm removing?
3. How do I know how much to fill and should it just be tap water?
4. Am I correct in assuming that the only proper way is to sweat the two joints and not compression or some type of union?
Thanks again, it is amazing what so called experts don't know out there but tell you they are experts.
