 My father took a shower and the water would not go back down the drain. When he flushed the toilet it backed up into the shower. He poured some liquid plumber down the drain through about 3 inches of water in the shower. He left it overnight and most of the water drained back. Today there was no water in the shower and when he flushed the toilet a little of the water came back into the shower. He poured some more liquid plumber in the now dry drain and 5 minutes later there was 3 inches of water back in the shower. He tried a snake but did not encounter anything.

Your Father either has a clogged maindrain or the vent is plugged. Depending on what size snake he used, he may not have reached the clog or just made a hole in it. May have to get a full size auger or have it done. If it is the vent, you can go up on the roof and look down it. Clear any debris you can by hand and then flush it with a garden hose. He may want to try a product called Drain Care which is an enzyme drain cleaner. It takes overnight but it clings to the clog and eats it. Unless it is tree roots. Good luck.
