I have a gas furnace( or large room heater ) that has no trouble lighting the pilot and keeping it lit. it is only when i turn the valve from "pilot" to "on" that the pilot simply goes out. In my experience, i have had faulty thermocouples that do not allow the pilot to remain on when i release the button, but that is not the same in this case. the pilot stays lit until i turn the switch to on. any clue?

Id change the T/C and check that the pilot light is clean in the orifice and its venturi so you have a clean blue flame on it.

i agree with ed, if the tcouple does not fix it i would look at the valve
