 When the burners on gas cooker are lit there are flashes of yellow on the end of the blue flames. The gas engineer I called to inspect the cooker reassured me that this is normal and is carbon being burned. Is this correct?

Hello voovon and Welcome into my Gas Appliances topic.

There should be no yellow in the flames. Not sure what is meant by "Flashes" of yellow but suspect that may really be orange flashes of flames when the grates are bumped or banged. That is normal. That is minor orange color which is also okay. Just dust burning.

Carbon should not be present anywhere. Not on the grates nor should the flames leave any carbon or soot in the pots or pans. If there is deposits and the flames are yellow tipped, the air shoutters are closed too much, the burners are overgassed or the fuel is the incorrect type for the stove.

Not enough specific or detailed info provided for me to determine an exactly or likely cause for the symptom you are describing. Also difficult to invision what is meant by flashes of yellow and under what conditions such result.
