I have a house that was built in 1960 and the bathroom has yellow tile in shower, yellow tub, sink and toilet. the trim is a dark brown wood. I don't know what color would look best with the yellow fixtures. How can I make the yellow seem less intense?

by working WITH it, instead of against it. incorporate it into the color scheme. if you have the need for a shower curtain and/or window treatment, find a fabric with a print that contains yellow plus other colors. greens & blues work very well with yellow. so does black and/or white. depending on the yellow's intensity, you might be able to go with a "fall" color scheme - browns, pumpkins, & olives.
i think it would help to brighten & freshen & update the space if you'll paint all the dark brown trim white or cream - depending on the fabrics you've got.
yellow will be very easy to work with. be glad you've got it - everything retro is BACK! if you're still unhappy, just think - it could be worse - you could have PINK or AVOCADO!

Not sure if you're into contemporary or more traditional style, but French Country furnishings look great. They are often yellow walls, with a toile in blue and white. Can be gorgeous!

i love toile! :)
also, the red & white/cream toile would be really dramatic with the yellow tile, especially if the yellow is more of a gold-yellow.
there's also a yellow & red toile that might work....
then again, the black & white would be pretty, too........
