View Full Version : Heat Pump cutting off well pump!!

My heat pump runs along like all of them making the normal sound, before it cuts off it starts making "Another Sound" like another stronger louder motor coming on!! This lasts for about 30 seconds to a couple of minutes then it shuts down.
Over the last 4 days it has shut down (Tripped Breaker) the well. I believe the heat pump is drawing so much electricity it trips the breaker on the well pump. If the heat pump is "cut off" the well "Breaker" is never tripped.
What is causing the loud sound before the heat pump shuts down? It actually sounds like another motor kicking in but that doesn't make any sense!

If you are wired right there. The heat pump has not a thing to do with the well pump breakers. Id say unless you have a GEO set up. If you dont have a amprobe to put on the well and the heatpump to check it out get a hvac guy in to look at it. Also can you have brown outs here How is the 220V comeing into the home. You said the heat pump didnt trip it breakers??? You can have a lot of "Ifs" here.

Ed, i didn't finish my sentence.
In the last 4 days the breaker has been tripped about 4 times. The only occurrence of everything happening at once (I'm aware of) was this morning. The heat pump came on, when it shut down there was the noise I talked about. At that point i got up and tried to take a shower, just as I finished the water stopped.
The heat pump was running but the air coming out was "Cold".
I cut off the heat pump and threw the breaker to the water pump back on. It's worked perfect all day (water). I cut the heat pump back on this afternoon and the noise is gone, but the outside unit went/tried through the defrost cycle 3 times while my neighbor and I was standing there watching it. This all took place in about 4 minutes if that!

Ed, 5:55 EST it happened again! The heat was evidently getting ready to cut off when i heard the sound like a motor (electric) coming on again. I quickly checked outside (Heat pump) no problem. I then ran down to the basement and the "Secondary" sound, witch is very noticeable was coming from the "UPTURN" duck (that distributes the heat) after the air has gone through the electronic filter (HP). Is this normal ? My neighbors system just comes on and shuts off with no residual noise like I described to you.

If it is any help, my neighbors electric bill was $32.00 for the month ending 10 Nov! Mine was $102.00!
He was running "Air" and "Heat"! I ran "no airC" and only heat for the last 2 weeks!!!
His house is with 2 people, mine is just me.

The heat pump was running but the air coming out was "Cold". Was it in defrost then and the heat strips didnt kick on???

Lots of ifs here . Id call a good hvac guy or gal. How old is this unit. What is the volts comeing into the home. Defrost board bad are set wrong. What is amp draw on pump and on compressor. Noise inside would you say its in the freon lines?.4 way valve dont work right. inside orifice or TXV valveor check valve not right. When was last time freon was put in ?Can have contaminate it or noncondensables
3 min late on this post have to add to it. Id still call a hvac here. That elec. bill a strip stuck on .Are broke and its end going to ground for 110.
You have a lot of ifs, someone has to look at it for sure. If you dont have a meter and know how to RING it all out.Get some one

Ed I brought in an expert as suggested (he has 60 years experience!)
This is what he found:
Some relay was totally shorted so that when the unit wanted to shut down it received conflicting signals, so it cut on the emergency heat for a period before finishing shutdown! The noise I was hearing was the emergency heat kicking in, even though it was (thermostat) not set on emergency heat but the regular heat setting. He said this qualified it to send my heating bill to "TRIPLE" what it should be!!!!!!! The Freon was also a little low so he filled that.
However he said that regardless of the "Load" it was causing it was not responsible for the shorting of my well pump! So he checked out that wiring and said it was a dead short! We went outside to the well, removed the cap, BANG, there was the short right in the wire splice in the wires tucked into the down pipe! Cut out the section re spliced (correctly), all is well (pun intended). :D
I bet you will never forget this one.

PS. I didn't recognize the sound of the "element heating" kicking in because I had NEVER had it set (thermestat) there before. That's why it sounded so different to me.

No but just add it to the list. Ants in side a sealed relay. Chipmunks get in and eat on the tstat wire and you cant find where the short is and its not there all the time.
Dont forget clean filter every 30 to 90 day :D
Ed ;) Glad you got it fixed

I imagine you have heard quite a few, when I stop and think about it.
As for cleaning the filter. I had one of those HP electronic devices installed in the down return. However I am starting to think it was a waste of money. You still have to clean it about every 60 days, then wait for it to dry, and reinstall!! The $650.00 would have bought a hell of a lot of good filters you could install and through away.
However i let myself get talked into the "Hype", so hear I lay in the bed I made for myself.
I have been thinking about putting another filter (Rough weave) at the "Down return" on the wall upstairs but I can't think of the company that makes the replacement unit. You just open it up like a "BIG" book and put in a filter. This would greatly increase the cleaning increment of the HP unit. If you happen to know the name of the company, I would appreciate it.

You don't want to put to many filters in there. You will restrict the airflow.

Purolator filter will have a 4"and 5" pleated one that should fit there where the cells go. Take them out turn it off and forget it. Have taken out more elec filters than have put in Like Matt said just use one filter is all but a good one.
