I have recently turned on my central heat for the first time, and am noticing that, although the therm. is set correctly, the system will cycle for about 30 secs and then shut off, only to repeat about every 3-5 minutes. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Just what do you have there for heat and cool. Then some one can help you. For now coil clean, filter clean, blower clean?

Do you have just electric heat there or a heat pump ? Does the outside unit turn on and off. Are just the inside fan?
Did AC work ok.

No pump, just electric heat. The ac worked fine, and the outside unit just runs with the ac

Look real closely at the center of the temperature adjusting knob. See a small metal strip that sits along a small ring of metal wire? Adjust it the other direction! It may say 'longer' or 'shorter' on it around this described thermostat part ( it's called an anticipator), adjust it to 'longer'. This may help. Later,

I have it set about as high as I can. Is it possible that is not functioning properly??

Make sure that the dial part of the anticipator is still making contact with the ring of wire. This situation may be in need of another thermostat. Go digital. Avoid the cheap home store models.

My system is called a furdown, I have cleaned the coils and theheater elements, was concerned that my coils were clogged causing heat to build up and trip the limit switches. I now have good air flow---same problem. several ac shops hae told me that while the relay is wearing out, it should still be good.
