Garage Ceiling ladder, extra support?

Hello all,

My wife has asked me to install a ceiling ladder so we can use space above our garage for storage. Sounds easy enough. As I was discussing this with a neighbor they mentioned that my garage will need extra support.

The ceiling currently has 2 x 6's spaced 4' apart running the length of the garage. For support will I simply need to put cross beams, say every four feet? Or will I need to do something else to support the plywood and ceiling ladder?

Any help would be appreciated.

Boy, I would have an engineer look at that. You did not say how far the 2x6's are spanning, but they seem inadequate for spanning the length of a garage especialy at 48" spacing.. I would not think of adding any live load (storage in attic) until someone knowledgable looks at it.
