If you would like to make your basement more like the cozier parts of your home, consider carpeting. The best type of floor covering to use starts with a padding that has an anti-microbial built into it to keep it from supporting mold or mildew in moist conditions.

Consider a carpeting made from olefin face fiber. It's very chemical resistant, which is great when you need to clean it with an aggressive cleaning solution, like bleach. On that note, mold and mildew love moist, stagnant air, so you should try to create a dry, airy basement using an automatic dehumidifier and ceiling fans to keep the air moving.
