My shower started leaking into the basement. Called a plumber who came in when I was not home, he opened the faucet/shower assembly and told me the valve 'exploded' on him & wet his clothes. He left to change b4 I got home & haven't heard from him since yesterday. All in all, he's left the shower faucet assembly open saying that he need to open up the tiles & change it. Any suggestions on what could be the problem or if I can fix it myself. I'm tired of calling the plumber & leaving messages on his VM.

We need to know what is leaking on the valve to give you likely clues on what you can do to fix it.

Its the valve in the faucet assembly that is leaking. At least that's wot I believe, from what the plumber said, & from the fact that he left that assembly opened. Will I have to change the entire assembly or is the valve replaceable? Is there a way to figure out the point of leak, if it is not the valve. Thanks.

Is this a stand-alone shower, or a shower over a tub?
Does it have separate valves for hot and cold, or one valve for both?
Do you know the manufacturer of the valve?
Could you see the leak, before the plumber disassemble the valve? If so, can you describe where it was, e.g. around the valve stem, or the valve body, etx.
Is the fixture inside a ceramic tile wall? Is there an access panel behind the shower valves, (on the other side of the wall) so you can easily access the plumbing?

It is a Pegasus Series 7000 (571 521G) purchased from Home Depot.
The shower is over a bath tub. It has a hot & cold valve. i could not see the leak from teh assembly. The assembly is behind a ceramic wall, but faucet has about a 7 inch dia plate which if I remove exposes the faucet assembly.
The assembly as it is left now has all the hot/cold,spout/shower connections & the seat in which the spindle etc go. So I'm thinking of buying a new similar assembly & just replace the 'internals'. Am I right in doing that. Any other suggestions....please.

Mandy,
I still do not understand how water is leaking into the basement, or where the leak is coming from.
Your faucet has a lifetime guarantee, so you should not have to buy parts. You can call Pegasus Faucets Customer Support at 888-328-2383. Perhaps by being able to talk with you and have you describe your problem, they can both tell you how to fix it, and ship you the parts. Shipping is free if the parts failed.
If this does not work, please post back with more details of the leak.

hmm, sounds like an issue simalar to mine.. but my problem was that the idiot forgot to "tie" in the pipe before closing on the house.;/
in our house theres 2.5 baths
and when we used our second bathroom upstairs to test out how the water pressure was, along with the masterbath...we noticed our fresh basment has 50 gl of water on the floor  due to that pipe not being connected /tied in....boy was i
turned out they forgot to tie in the pipe...lol which was coverd by the insulation..so no one know there was an open pipe
Have the same problem with leaking into my basement...turns out the shower diverter is faulty...very loose in it's assembly (it actually wiggles a bit)....no way to tighten more than was done at the factory....I installed my unit two years ago and it just started leaking last week...
Have left message with pegasus customer service for a return call....
One thing I noticed in disassembling the unit today...all the bragging about copper and brass wterways is fine, but the screw that is inserted into the water handle assebly is a cheap steel screw with locking washerhead built in....was so rusted that I had to use a screw extractor tool to remove...seems like an area that is not water-tight should be using some other material for the one piece in the assembly that allows you to get to all the other peices. Replace with Brass screw and washer while awaiting customer service call-back
Good luck to all on this system
