Hi,

I have just purchased a home with all gas appliances.. This will be my first experience with natural gas so I am a little nervous. There seems to be a strange smell in the house and It seems to be stronger right at the thermostat on the hot water heater. The heater is about 17 years old and I plan to replace it shortly. Does anyone know if there could be a gas leak at the thermostat and if so how would I confirm a leak? Other than the smell there doesn't appear to be any problems with the tank.

Thanks,

Darrell

Take soapy water or kids bubble stuff and put it on one place at a time. On all the pipe and valves there. This should find it for you.

Call your local utilities company, they will arrive usually within an hour of your call.

They will use a device (sniffer) that can detect what the odor is coming from your water heater.

Don't second guess this situation.
