the pier below the post that supports the center beam in my house is deteriorated. it is on a slight slope, and part of the dirt below the pier is washed out, leaving the post on a questionable footing.

the post is a 4x6, and my plan is as follows:

build temporary support with 4x4s on either side of the post.
remove old post.
Dig 15x15x24 deep hole and fill with rebar-reinforced concrete (current pier is simply a 12x12x6 deep pad- I figure that beefing this up significantly will do the trick.
Install concrete/rebar footing
raise beam slightly with jack.
pressure fit new post to beam.
connect new post to pier with j bolts
connect new post to beam with L-shaped brackets and lag bolts.

Does anyone have any suggestions or critiques regarding this plan>?

Thanks!

The Family Handyman magazine ran an article about exactly how to do this a couple of years ago. Here's a link to it: http://www.keepmedia.com/pubs/FamilyHandyman/2001/04/01/533473?from=search&criteria=replace+post&refinePubID=197&refineDays=0

Good luck with your project.
