I need some advice regarding the best way to strip the paint from an old 1950's metal desk (steel and aluminum). Is there any preparation I need to do? What product do I use to strip old paint? Lastly, is there any way I can refinish it by just polishing or sanding the metal surface so that it can stand on its own without repainting?
Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks,
Reemon

Any good paint and varnish remover will get rid of the paint. Getting an over-the-counter clear finish to adhere to polished metal is something else. Check with your local Sherwin Williams dealer. They used to make a clear epoxy finish (two parts - mixed at time of application). This holds up very well, if you can get the furniture looking good enough for a clear finish.

They did use a form of baked enamel back in the 50's so stripping this piece maybe impossible. IF a remover will not work or a heat gun forgo removing it and just paint over it preferably using a spray enamel. IF you want a nice crome looking desk look in the automotive paint section. Most metals require a primer IF you use automotive paint BUT paints like Rustoleum or Tremclad do not.
