our hallway is "T" shaped. the board run down the main part of our hallway so you can take a beltsander and properly sand them with the grain. however, the main hallway has a short section that intersects the main hallway at a 90 degree angle. even though the hallway intersects at a 90 degree angle the boards continue to run in the same direction as they do in the main hallway...so basically its impossible to fit a belt sander in there and sand with the grain.
I was thinking that I could do the majority of the work with a hand held orbital sander but hit it once with the beltsander with a 80 grit sandpaper going against the grain to even out any gouges from the handheld orbital.
does that sound like a fair solution?
thanks!

I'm going to move this thread to wood floor forum of this website, but leave it here also, so you get advice from both,

Use the "edger" to sand the remaining part of the hallway that is cross grained.
You should be using the edger around the perimeter edges after each cut of grit, and hand scraping the corners.

Rent one of those random orbital floor sanders. They're way less aggressive than the old belt sanders and I'm pretty sure they work fine no matter which way you sand. The rental company could probably tell you for certain.
