I'm getting set to install a storm door and I ran into a small problem. My exterior door frame seems to be to narrow. I can't install my storm door because the door knob on my exterior door sticks out too far, the door knob prevents the storm door from shutting. It appears as if I need to "build out" mt door frame to accomodate the storm door. Can you give me any advise on how to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Is the storm door or the storm door handle hitting? How much to you have to build out?

LOL, my thought exactly...just dont ask how I know:) I guess with all the hundreds of storms I've installed I cant remember any of them the jamb thickness was too narrow, but with all the houses out there anythings possible, and it's hard to say without seing what you have to work with right now of the best course of action to get it installed correctly and look right.
Anybody else happening on this thread, before you install your handle on the storm, double check it will not interfear with the existing entry door handle. Raise or lower the "jig" they send you for drilling the handle holes on the storm unit.

If I knew how to send you guys pics of the doorway I would. My problem is that the doorknob sticks out farther than the doorjam, so I wouldn't be able to place a storm door in there without "bringing out" the doorjam. My other problem is that my doorway width from jam to jam is 35 1/4 inches. Most doors are sold either 32 or 36 inches. I've installed a couple of storm doors in the past, but they were REAL straight-forward. It would probably cost me $200 for Home Depot to come out and install it.

For $200 you can buy a new pre hung exterior door, install it yourself and the problem should be solved.

Ive done hundred of storm doors and install for 1 of the major home improvement stores. Its seems that there isnt any brickmold on the door unit.A lot of units (especially doors with sidelites) come w/out brickmold and and the opening on a 36 unit runs about 35-3/4.If the doorknob hangs out as far as the trim, that is it.I even run across this on new houses.I call them "not storm door ready" Add brickmold (about $6 a stick) and there is your 1" clearance. On a standard 4 9/16 jamb i have had the crystal handles (if you bought a pella select door) and chose the crystal handles, they hang out farther and will hit door knobs.
