I have a 1979 Johnson 115 outboard with over heating problems at 4500rpm or above. The unit is in very good condition and runs beautifully except for the above problem. I have had it at the Johnson people who tell me it runs fine at all speeds and that all the water passages are in perfect condition (checked with heads off) but at 4500 rpm or higher the alarm goes off when I am on the water. I believe the unit should run at 62 degrees C at idle and about 58 degrees C at speed. Can anyone shed any light?

I have a 79 Evinrude 115 that I was having the same problem with, the water was flowing just fine, but the overheat alarm kept going off. I ordered a thermostat kit (included both thermostats, gaskets, springs, and all). So far I have not had anymore problems with the alarm going off, and it actually runs better all around than before.
