Hi, how could I go about installing a light fixture in a room with no ceiling access (colonial house - first floor)? There is no existing fixture, there are only outlets in the walls.

I'm thinking about calling an electrician for the job, but I can't figure out how they would run the electrical cable to the new light. Is it impossible without pulling out the plaster walls?

In any way you look at it no matter who does the work you will have to punch a few small holes to run a wire to the ceiling box from a wall box when there is no attic access. It will not be a hard job. All you need to do is repatch those two or so holes and paint and you will be done.

n8wood,

Running the wire in the ceiling space is easiest if the joists and wall studs run in the direction you wish the wire to go.

To cross a stud or cieling joist you will need to make an opening in the plaster that is big enough to get a drill in to make a hole.
If you hire an electrician they should have an angle drill which would allow a small opening.

Another alternative is to use a decorative surface mounted conduit which can be painted to match the walls.
