I have a 18-20 year old heat pump around a 8 seer I guess. I have 2 estimates. One using American Standard replacement 3 ton 11 seer with variable speed AH for around $5,100.00. Estimator said lines do not have to be replaced from handler to heat pump and when using R22 refrigerant for the 11seer unit.
2nd estimate Trane XR12 13seer w/variable spped handler replacing the lines and using R410A refrigerant. this estimate is around 6,575 and upgrade to R1410a14.75 seer for around 6,845.00.

What is the better deal? Should you replace the lines if they are ok? Thanks for all of your help. This is my first post.

Its a lot in what you can go for are need there. If you have long cold winters there go for the better heat pump. If short and mild go for a lower HSPF.

Now that Trane XR 12 comes in R22 and R410a.
R22 will be made till 2030.
R410a freon cost a lot. if you have a leak later on all the freon has to be pulled out and new put in . Has to be charged by liquid
Now if cold long winters Id go for the Trane XL16i a SEER of 17.00 and a HSPF of 10.55 with the V/S blower and a 10 year warranty.
Rheem is also a good bet for units.
The copper lines can and can not work. Its all in what the units call for.
18 years thats good for a unit most we say 15 years tops and thats for just an AC unit.
Id get 3 bids or more here . Think about it do you use more for heat are the AC and go that way.
