I have a Majic Chef gas oven and the oven takes 30-45 minutes to get up to 300 degrees. The ignitor glows brightly, but the flame is small and "runs" down the burner in small waves. I had the burner out, there is no blockage or corrosion. I used a tip cleaner on the orifice that feeds the burner, but it did the same thing when I re-assembled. The stove-top burners and the broiler work fine. It's just the oven that won't heat.

Hello svkamper and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliances topic.

Classic symptom if a defective gas valve. Internal gas flow valve not working properly. Gas valve should be replaced. Problem with only replacing the gas valve is the hot surface (HSI) glow ignitor. HSI may be glowing but just not allowing enough electrical current to flow to the gas valve.

Valve needs 5 volts. HSI may be weak and using too much current to attempt to glow at it's max rating. Therefore, less current to the valve. (Less than 5 volts to valve) Which creates the symptom described. Small waves of flames on the burner.

Best solution is to replace both the HSI (Hot Surface Ignitor) and the gas control valve (GCV) at the same time. A matched pair. Works best that way. Done by many service techs. Replace both as a matched pair.

Use cautions:
Turn off power and or unplug appliance.
Turn off gas supply.
Remove parts...carefully.

Write down make, model and serial numbers.
Take parts and info to any local applaince parts store.
Part stores listed in the phone book.

Obtain new parts.
Install new parts exactly as found.
Carefully doing so.
HSI's break easily.
Neither parts are returnable or refundable once you leave the store.

Install new parts.
Turn on gas supply.

Test for leaks at the nut on the aluminum gas supply tube going into GCV.
No Leaks, reassemble oven with flame spreader on top of burner.

Turn on electrical power or plug appliance into wall outlet.

Test oven.

All okay. Great.

Job done.
