Im am a college student and i have a new bedroom being built in the basement of my parents new house. i want it to look very rustic, and also maybe even tough looking. im a country kind of guy, but i also want it to look nice what are some good ideas to set this room apart and make it look rustic but with style.

good!

the first thing that comes to my mind is, forget plain old sheetrock for the walls. put up paneling or better yet, old barnwood, on the walls. at the very least, put up wallpaper that looks like paneling or log cabin logs. that'll give you the most bang for your buck, and make a huge impact theme-wise. then, if possible, use furniture that is very lodge-y looking - very rough & distressed, and mismatched. find a bedding ensemble that's plaid and maybe flannel. (there are lots of those out there - try The Company Store or Domestications or Brylane Home). instead of a curtain rod, find a fairly straight branch instead. throw in some leather accessories, a deer head, some fishing poles & canoe oars propped in the corner, and you're set!

is that what you had in mind, GrizzlyAdams? or is that too backwoods?

sorry if i offended with the Grizzly Adams remark - didn't mean to! i was trying to think of someone who looked real outdoorsy & rugged and that's who popped into my head!!

flooring - first choice is, of course, wood, or something that looks like it. the more knot holes the better. then use various rugs on top.

second choice would be something nubby, like a berber, maybe with a really textured pattern and lots of flecks in the color.

third choice would be frieze carpet - it's that stuff that looks like a wet poodle or something. it comes flecked also.

runner up would be some sort of stone or slate or rock. (not square tiles).

anything really natural looking &/or textural will work.

what look were you going for? log cabin? hunting lodge? fishing? indian? canoeing? grandpa's old tool shed? all of the above?

you should find your bedding first, before picking out a paint color. look for a quilt or comforter set that's got good colors, like navy, hunter, red, tan, etc. maybe a plaid or denim, or combination of the two. or you could go with a solid comforter and get plaid or printed sheets (good choice if you don't ever make your bed! ;) ) there seem to be a lot of fun printed sheets in flannel.

THEN, when you've secured the bedding, pick out a wall color to compliment the fabrics. i probably wouldn't paint any one flat color. i'd mottle a couple colors together for an aged, rustic look. i'd probably go with a navy or a brownish red (barn red). if you don't want that much bold color everywhere, you could put up a really gnarly 2x4 board at the chair rail level (or just find a good wallpaper border) and then just paint the bold color beneath it, and paint the upper part of the wall a lighter color, like a beige or something.
