View Full Version : Help, can't prime pump
Hello. Yesterday morning we lost electricity briefly, left house returned about 45 minutes later to find electric on and pump running but no water. Tried to prime pump but it was taking endless gallons of water. Replaced foot valve. Pump still will not prime or build pressure and it still will not completely fill with water. How much water should it take to prime. We usually do not require so much. Could air be in lines? Any Suggestions?
Thank you

A jet pump that runs dry instead of the thermal overload shutting it off, usually ends up with a bad impellor or seals. That doesn't have anything to do with not being able to prime it though. Usuall causes of not being able to prime is a leaking foot valve or plumbing but if there is a belly in the line to the well, you may have to prime with pressure rather than just pouring water in the pump outlet. Describe your system fully.

We finally got our water back tonight. We didnt realize we had to refill the lines completely ourselves after changing the foot valve. Found this out after buying a new pump and reading manual. Thank you for your response.
