View Full Version : Asphalt shingle release tape - what to do?

Just what IS the preferred method of handling the release tape on the back of asphalt shingles. I have read references which state that it "need not be removed". I have seen shingles with release tape imprinted with "DO NOT REMOVE THIS TAPE". I have found no installation instructions (at least on the web) from any manufacturer which talk about either removing it or not.

It would appear to me that it's only logical to take it off before nailing the shingle down, yet the example noted above seems to indicate otherwise. Just what IS the wisdom on this matter??
Thanks in advance,

The release tape on the back of the shingle serves one purpose and one purpose only.
It keeps the shingles from sticking together in the bundles.
Once you take the shingle out of the bundle, the release tape serves no purpose.

You do NOT need to remove it.

Like said lay one on top of the other like you lay them on the roof. You will see why you dont have to pull it off
