Can someone please help, i am trying to replace the washers on the bathtub hot and cold knobs, because when i turn them on, water leaks down the wall under each knob, i have taken the cap off as well as the screw, now i can't get the metal ring thing , not sure what it is called, Nut? to turn. any suggestions on how to get this thing off, i have tryed a wrench, wd 40, but it just won't turn. Next question is it really my washers that are causing this problem?

kfine65, Welcome to the DIY forums.
The thing you cannot get off, is it the cover that goes up against the wall (usually chrome). If so, it is called an escheon. It may have been glued to the wall. They are usually just sealed around the edge with caulking. Probably have to take a knife or razorblade to cut around it to loosen.
It could be the washers or the packing nut on the stem. After you get the cover off, slide the handle back on and turn the faucet on to locate where the water is coming from. Good luck and post back with any questions by clicking reply at the bottom of this post and it will bring your post up to the top.
