I need to make an ottoman and need advice on getting started.

What KIND of ottomon. Easy method is to make a box out of plywood or use a plastic milk crate...cover with foam, cover with fabric.
If you want one with legs...use plywood base, add prefab legs, attach foam, cover with fabric using a staple gun, trim to finish.
